We have undertaken an experimental study of two novel metallic carbon compounds: graphite intercalated with metal hydrides (KH{sub x}C{sub n}) and alkali metal-doped fullerides M{sub x}C{sub 60} where M=K,Rb,Cs. A high pressure (p<80 kbar) diamond anvil cell for optical studies of KH{sub x}C{sub n} and M{sub x}C{sub 60} was built and tested for used in a double-beam spectrometer covering the range 0.5--6 eV. KH{sub x}C{sub n} was synthesized using vapor phase intercalation of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite with potassium vapor. Pristine and alkali metal doped C{sub 60} (Buckminsterfullerene) films were synthesized using both vapor phase intercalation and solid state diffusion techniques. Results of optical studies which probe the electronic and vibrational properties of C{sub 60}-based materials are presented.
