Polarization transfer in n-p scattering at 50 MeV

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5231909
The polarization transfer parameter D/sub t/(180/sup 0/) for n-p scattering has been measured at 50 MeV. The measurement was accomplished by scattering polarized neutrons produced by the D(vector d, vector n)/sup 3/He reaction from a polyethylene target. The polarization of the protons emitted at 0/sup 0/ from n-p scattering was measured in a carbon polarimeter system from which seven parameter data was obtained. Data reduction techniques for the seven parameter data are discussed, including methods for the elimination of background events. The result of this measurement tests the prediction of D/sub t/ from the phase shift analysis of the N-N data and that of a theoretical proposal concerning n-p charge exchange.
