In 1979, scientists at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory began investigating the sources, transformation, transport and fate of pollutants in Puget Sound and its watershed under Sec. 202 of the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act of 1971 (P.L. 92-532) which called in part for '...a comprehensive and continuing program of research with respect to the possible long range effects of pollution, overfishing, and man-induced changes of ocean ecosystems...' The effort was called the Long-Range Effects Research Program (L-RERP) after language in the Act and was later called the PMEL Marine Environmental Quality Program. The Long-Range Effect Research Program consisted of (1) sampling dissolved and particulate constituents in the water column by bottle sampling, (2) sampling settling particles by sediment trap and (3) sampling sediments by grab, box, gravity and Kasten corers. In the Data Report, a variety of data from particles collected in 104 traps deployed on 34 moorings in open waters between 1980 and 1985 are presented. The text of the data report begins with the sampling and analytical methods with the accompanying quality control/quality assurance data. The text of the data sections are a summary of the available data and published literature in which the data is interpreted along with a catalogue of the data available in the Appendix (on microfiche located in the back pocket of the data report).
