Effects of boron and grain size on the strain-rate sensitivity of Fe-45Al

Focusing on the effect of grain size on room temperature fracture: Gaydosh et al. showed a steady increase in the elongation of furnace-cooled Fe-40Al in air from [approximately]1% for 220 [mu]m grains to [approximately]3% for 15 [mu]m grains, whilst the largest elongation for Fe-40Al tested in air (7%) was reported by Strothers and Vedula (12) for Y[sub 2]O[sub 3]-doped material with a [approximately]5 [mu]n grain size. A small grain size influence on ductility has also been noted for both boron-doped and unalloyed Fe-45Al tested in air. The purpose of the present paper is to report the effect of both boron and grain size on the strain rate dependence of the fracture of Fe-45Al in air.
