A new ion-mole,haveule reaction apparatus, which consists of a photoionization source, a tandem mass spectrometer, and a radiofrequency (rf) octopole reaction cell, is described. Using a quadrupole mass filter to reject H/sub 3//sup +/ background ions formed at the photoionization region, absolute total cross sections for the reaction H/sub 2//sup +/(nu/sub 0/') + H/sub 2/(nu/sub 0/'' = 0) ..-->.. H/sub 3//sup +/ + H, have been measured as a function of the vibrational state of reactant H/sub 2//sup +/, where nu/sub 0/' = 0 to 4, over the center-of-mass collision energy range of 0.04 to 15 eV. With the triple-quadrupole double-octopole photoionization tandem mass spectrometer, absolute state-selected total cross sections for reaction N/sub 2//sup +/(X-tilde,v' = 0,1) + Ar(/sup 1/S/sub 0/) ..-->.. N/sub 2/(X-tilde,v) + Ar/sup +/(/sup 2/P/sub 3/2,1/2/) (reaction (1)) over E/sub c.m./ range of 1.2 to 140 eV have been measured. Using the triple-quadrupole double-octopole apparatus, absolute fine-structure transition cross sections for the reactions Ar/sup +/(/sup 2/P/sub 3/2/) + Ar and Ar/sup +/(/sup 2/P/sub 3/2/) + N/sub 2/(X-tilde,v = 0) at laboratory collision energies of 25 to 200 eV have been measured. 199 refs., 14 figs., 7 tabs.
