Advanced technology solves Big Rivers capacitor-bank-protection problems

Thirty months of operation have proven that Big Rivers Electric Corp. has found an improved, technically sound, economically superior solid-state solution to its grounded wye-connected shunt-capacitor-protection problems. Specifically, the new capacitor-bank protection system is highly sensitive to overvoltage stresses on individual capacitor units within the bank, yet is insensitive to routine system and back-to-back switching disturbances. It provides fast, easy compensation for signal errors introduced by capacitor-unit manufacturing tolerance variations and by fixed-system voltage unbalance. Its built-in panel controls enable operators to achieve signal-error compensation in minutes following capacitor-bank energization, eliminating the tedious shakedown operation of relocating individual units within the bank. In addition, the system's improved grounding and surge protection at critical points in the control circuits preclude misoperation and surge-voltage damage sometimes experienced with other solid-state devices.
