As part of our continuing assessment of the Asia-Pacific energy markets, the Energy Program has embarked upon a study of Australia that discusses in detail the structure of the energy sector within the region. The study also provides the reader with an overview of the economic situation and, when possible, of the political situation. We have particularly highlighted petroleum and gas issues and have attempted to show the foreign trade implications of oil and gas trade. Finally, as much as possible, we have provided the latest available statistics - more often than not, from unpublished sources. Staff members have traveled extensively in the country under review and have spoken to top policymakers in government and industry. Thus, these reports provide not only information but the latest thinking on energy issues in various countries. 23 figs., 82 tabs.
