The {ital 1989} {ital Pacific} {ital Northwest} {ital Loads} {ital and} {ital Resources} {ital Study} establishes the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) planning basis for an adequate, cost-effective, and environmentally sound supply of electricity to BPA's customers. BPA's long-range planning incorporates generating resource availability with a range of forecasted electrical consumption. The future electrical demands --firm loads -- are subtracted from the available resources to determine whether BPA and the region will be surplus or deficit. If resources are greater than loads in any particular year or month, there is a surplus of energy and/or capacity. Conversely, if firm loads exceed available resources, there is a deficit of energy and/or capacity, and additional conservation, contract purchases, or generating resources will be needed to meet load growth. This analysis updates the {ital 1988} {ital Pacific} {ital Northwest} {ital Loads} {ital and} {ital Resources} {ital Study}, published in December 1988.
