Effect on plants of air pollutants derived from motor vehicle emissions

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5222845
The study examines the differences and similarities in the nature and extent of plant damage systems resulting from fumigation with principal toxicants associated with air pollution caused by motor vehicle exhausts. The ability of a given toxicant to incite injury depends on the age of the leaf and the conditions of illumination under which the plant is grown prior to, during, and following fumigation. The growth of plants, even in the absence of visible injury, is also affected. The authors present evidence to indicate that the chemical and physical systems within the plant are disrupted by the phytotoxicants. Detailed studies into how pollutants affect plant physiological and biochemical processes will give a better understanding of the total effects of pollution on plants and the manner. 45 references.
