Space resolved spectra of 2p-3d multiplets of Al XI and Al X emitted from laser irradiated thin foils
The spectra of 2p-3d multiplets of Al XI (lambda approx. = 52 A) and Al X (lambda approx. = 55 A) emitted from plasmas produced by the irradiation of 9..mu..m thick Al foils with a neodymium laser focused to peak intensities approx. = 2 x 10/sup 15/ W cm/sup -2/ have been recorded with spatial resolutionapprox. =30..mu..m. The measured relative intensities show a considerable departure from the expected intensity ratios within the multiplets in the plasma expanding in the rear half-space of the laser irradiated foil. This indicates a partial intermixing of the 3d quantum states of both Al XI and Al X. The role of superthermal electrons in creating the plasma at the rear of the foil is discussed.
