Brillouin scattering on H/sub 2/O above 70 GPa: transition to symmetric ice (ice X)

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5221624
H/sub 2/O and D/sub 2/O have been studied by Brillouin scattering under high pressure. Up to 35 GPa, the effective longitudinal elastic constants exhibit similar behavior in contrast with the behavior of the bulk modulus. H/sub 2/O was studied up to 74 GPa. A phase transition occurs around 46 GPa. This high pressure phase, ice X, is probably the hydrogen-symmetric centered cubic phase.
