Mechanism for the nonlinearities of the power--current characteristics of stripe-geometry heterojunction lasers

The power--current characteristics of stripe-geometry heterojunction lasers exhibit nonmonotonic behavior, discontinuities, and hysteresis loops. The difference in the power--current characteristics for different laser designs suggest that the operation of the laser is being affected by the weakly pumped side regions of the active layer: on the sides at the stripe contact. Calculations have been made that suggest that this mechanism is the primary cause for nonlinear p-I characteristics in all stripe lasers particularly for lasers with a lightly doped active layer.
