Title: Environmental Sciences Branch semiannual progress report, January-June 1981

Abstract

Research and evaluation activities for the period January 1, 1981 to June 30, 1981 are summarized. Progress in four primary areas of effort are reported: dust transport, distribution of transuranics in sediment, evaluation of critical ecological pathways for radionuclides, and terrestrial ecosystem compartmentalization of plutonium and americium. Progress is also described in programs dealing with Rocky Flats Plant land management, meteorological analysis of a spring windstorm and of a flash flood, efficiency measurements on filter media used for environmental monitoring, aerosol collection efficiency measurement on a Sierra high-volume impactor sampler, and incident evaluation techniques using foliar deposition sampling.

  • A summary is presented of activities of the Environmental Studies and Environmental Analysis Groups during the period January through June 30, 1980. Four major projects are reported; namely, dust transport including filter efficiency studies, distribution of transuranics in sediment, critical ecological pathways for radionuclides, and ecosystem compartmentalization of transuranics. Progress is described for the special programs dealing with management of open space lands at Rocky Flats, assurance of quality in environmental monitoring measurements, assessment of epidemiological studies of health effects purported to be related to the Plant, and evaluation of environmental monitoring data. Some of the reported project activities onmore » Rocky Flats Plant site include studies of: airborne dust concentration and specific americium-241 activity in the field east of the asphalt pad; vertical fluxes of dust in the same field; vertical sediment sampling profiles of plutonium-239, -240 and americium-241 in the Great Western Reservoir spillway; radiological sediment sampling of water bodies on and near the Plant site; measured frequency and coverage values of representative plant species and their importance values for two test plots near the Plant; transuranic specific activities of vegetation from the same two test plots; airborne deposition and root uptake of transuranics by plants at the Lindsay Ranch Pond and the greenhouse site; and tissue analysis (for transuranics) of deer road-killed near or on the Plant site.« less
  • Results of environmental and health related studies of synthetic fuels conducted in January-June 1981 are described. This report consists of four major parts, each identified with either a specific technology or with comparative, generic research activities. Activities at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) gasifier are described in Sect. 3 and reflect upon a period of almost continuous gasifier operation and intensive process monitoring. In Sect. 4, results are presented of industrial hygiene measurements at the Hazelton, Pennsylvania, Community Area New Development Organization (CAN-DO) gasifier and at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC). An extensive run of the H-Coal pilot plantmore » began February 1981, and results of continued implementation of the environmental project are reported in Sect. 5. Finally, generic research activities concerned with the environmental and health evaluation of products, by-products, and effluents from fossil energy technologies are described in Sect. 6.« less
  • This report summarizes research and evaluation activities for the Environmental Sciences Branch from January 1, 1982 to July 1, 1982. Progress in five primary areas of effort is reported: (1) dust transport, (2) environmental health, (3) quality assurance of measurement techniques, (4) beryllium levels in regional soils, and (5) evaluation of actual and hypothetical Plantsite incidents. Progress is also described in programs dealing with (1) Plant land management, (2) distribution of transuranium (TRU) elements in sediments, and (3) alpha-emitter composition of Plantsite pond waters. 25 references, 18 figures, 14 tables.
