Title: The total isomerization process - A broad array of options

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5214026

The demand for high-octane unleaded gasoline is increasing and will continue to grow, particularly for super-premium grades. The expanding market for super unleaded gasoline is actually creating more demand for octane than the lead phase-down. Consumer demand is being stimulated further by refiner's aggressive and competitive marketing strategies worldwide. The expectations that lead credits will be used up before the end of this year is adding to the momentum. Union Carbide Corporation's licensed Total Isomerization Process (TIP) is the technology of choice among refiners worldwide. As illustrated in Figure 1, installed or committed units based on TIP or its stand-alone elements (the Hysomer and IsoSiv Processes) now upgrade over 370,000 BPD of pentane and hexane feedstocks. The reasons for TIP's success are numerous. It can deliver the highest octane boost of any commercial process. It uses a rugged molecular sieve catalyst and adsorbent. It can use reformer hydrogen off-gas without any pretreatment. Its product streams are not contaminated with chlorides and therefore do not require clean-up.
