Assessing near-term technologies for solar heating and air-conditioning systems

Journal Article · · Energy Commun.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5213113
This study addresses the development and application of a methodology intended to aid decision making on the allocation of R and D efforts for performance improvements in solar heating and cooling systems. The work described examines major technologies applicable to near-term solar systems with flat plate collectors. Physical models are applied to estimate improvements in system performance for different technology developments. Available projections of system costs are then used to evaluate the relative cost-effectiveness of the performance improvement for each technology option. A principle conclusion of the study is that development and application of new technologies to improve system performance has limited potential for reducing the total cost of near-term solar heating and cooling systems.
