Quasiclassical approximation to final-state effects in the scattering of neutrons from a hard-core fluid

A quasiclassical approximation is used to calculate S(q,..omega..) in the large-q limit for a one-dimensional gas of hard rods and for a three-dimensional hard-sphere gas. We find in both cases that S(q,..omega..) does not approach the impulse approximation as q..-->..infinity. In this limit, the form of the spectral function agrees with that suggested by Hohenberg and Platzman, but the half-width of the resolution function due to final-state interactions is (hq/2m)rhosigma rather than (hq/m)rhosigma.
