Sophisticated geochemical analyses were performed at the wellsite during the drilling of twelve Devonian-shale gas wells. The instruments measure the concentration and composition of free gas and oil, the identification of potential hydrocarbon reservoirs and the location of relative changes in shale-matrix permeability over the entire drilled section. These data, which are not available in any other manner, complement well-log analyses and are immediately available to aid in the selection of completion zones. Examples of each of these uses of geochemical data are presented in the report.
