Title: Fundamentals of gas treating

The first of the amines put into actual service in early treating installations was triethanolamine. By a process of evolution, the amine that has proved to be the most successful and is carrying the bulk of the load in natural gas purification is monoethanolamine. The basis of this process is the reaction of a primary amine with the acidic constituents of the gas. The chemical reaction equation is shown. The flow chart of a typical amine plant is presented. Contact is countercurrent, with the lean amine solution circulated over the top of the vessel and the gas passing into the base of the contactor and upward. The rich solution from the contactor flows to the solution- to solution exchange and then to the still where the solution is regenerated. The regenerated solution is cooled before being circulated back to the contactor. The acid gas regenerated from the solution goes overhead from the still column to a condenser where a major portion of the water vapor is condensed. This condensate is pumped back to the column as reflux. The acid gas is sent to a flare or to the sulfur recovery. (10 refs.)
