The preparation and structure of platinum group metal colloids are described. These materials are prepared by the direct reaction of the metal halide salts with SiH reducing agents such as (EtO){sub 3}SiH and Me{sub 2}(EtO)SiH. The structure of these and previously reported colloidal preparations are analyzed by AEM. HREM, ESCA, and XANES. These analyses show that stable, highly reduced metal colloids are produced without solvent; the colloids are stabilized by the liquid reaction products of reduction. The Pt, Rh, and Pd materials are crystalline.
