Researchers at Georgia Tech's Engineering Experiment Station are getting a wood waste conversion rate of about 80% when converting cellulose to sugar, which is then fermented into alcohol. Wood shavings, sawdust, fallen branches and trees unsuitable for lumber are used to produce ethanol. Tests of the technology will be undertaken when a small ethanol plant is built. If successful, the process could be ready for commercial use in several years.
