Solving certain stiff differential equations by transformation

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5206579

Methods for weakening the effects of stiffness when solving a single ordinary differential equation are studied. Particular attention is given to the kind of equation arising in the solution of Sturm--Liouville eigenvalue problems by shooting. A special transformation for this case is investigated and shown to increase efficiency greatly with respect to truncation errors as well as with respect to stiffness.
