Why some casing failures happen

Journal Article · · World Oil; (United States)
OSTI ID:5206008

The initial article of this two-part discussion of casing failures covered principal factors that cause casing to buckle (or influence degree of buckling), a major cause of many ''unexplained'' problems with such tubulars. This concluding installment now shows how buckling contributes to casing failures caused by drillpipe wear and how high hanging loads can significantly reduce burst strength of surface casing strings. Also discussed are important cementing considerations that will help achieve casing stability and alleviate the buckling problem, and some suggested repair procedures if casing does buckle and fail.
