A survey of emission x-ray analysis of coal covers the two types of spectroscopic systems available; excitation sources for x-ray emissions; the lack of adequate standards, with certified standards available only for trace elements in coal and fly ash;problems in obtaining representative samples due to the large variation in physical properties of coals, chars, ashes, residues, and products of coal liquefaction and gasification; methods of compensating for matrix absorption of x-rays, including dilution with inert material, use of thin samples, and mathematical correction procedures based on measured mass absorption coefficients or Compton scatter; types of samples which can be handled; precision of x-ray emission systems, generally 5 to 25%, with poorer results for elements of low than high atomic number; and detection limits, which range from 100 ppM for sodium to 0.5 ppM for elements heavier than iron. 19 references.
