As the price of oil escalates, harvesting hardwood residue from pine-hardwood stands for fuel may become economically feasible. In addition to reducing the timber industry's dependence on oil , such harvesting utilizes an otherwise unused forest resource while reducing subsequent site preparation costs. The current feasibility was examined through conducting an economic input-output study of an ongoing operation in Louisiana, A computer simulation model was constructed and verified to examine the economic impacts of various equipment configurations. The data indicated that harvesting systems such as those studied are economical only as the operation downtime approaches zero. Further, equipment congestion has a significant impact on the economic efficiency. 9 references.
