The underground gasification of coal would appear to be a more attractive alternative method of energy development during the latter part of the Twentieth Century than it was earlier. More stringent environmental standards, increased concern for mine safety and economic considerations that require another look at different methods and lower quality seams all serve to emphasize the positive points of underground gasification. Underground gasification offers considerable potential especially as a safer, more environmentally acceptable means of using lower quality coal seams.
