  1. Babcock and Wilcox, Alliance, OH (United States)

The Babcock and Wilcox Company has been under contract with the US Department of Energy since late 1992 to develop a low emission boiler system (LEBS). The goal of this multiphase project is to greatly reduce emissions from future pulverized coal-fired electric power plants. Additional goals are to enhance plant efficiency and reduce waste without increasing plant cost. Four subsystems were identified to facilitate the advanced plant design. NO{sub x} control, SO{sub 2}/particulate control, boiler, and balance of plant subsystem teams were formed. The teams include Babcock and Wilcox (Prime), PSI Powerserve, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Raytheon Engineers and Constructors. Following conceptual subsystem designs, research and development activities were started in the fall of 1993 to address key design uncertainties. These activates included engineering analysis, pilot-scale testing, and numerical modeling. The results of the NO{sub x} control Subsystem R and D effort with emphasis on the MIT radially stratified flame core (RSFC) and B and W DRS XCL burner tests will be the focus of this paper. Results at the 5 million Btu/hr scale look very promising. Burner performance was evaluated for a number of parameters including burner settings, excess air, and burner stoichiometry (Staging). Detailed inflame measurement of gas composition, temperature, velocity were taken for selected conditions. Solids concentration and composition were also measured for some cases. Numerical modeling studies were done to benchmark the burners and provide a scaleup tool for the eventual commercial low-NO{sub x} burner.
