Coal-flame monitors provide reliable data

Utilities, boilermakers, burner manufacturers, and a number of speciality companies have invested considerable resources studying flame-monitoring techniques for pulverized-coal- fired boilers. Flame monitors are principally used to detect the failure of a flame, interrupt the fuel supply to prevent possible accumulation of unburnt fuel in the furnace, and avoid potentially explosive situations. In the ideal circumstances, the monitor can also provide data related to the quality of the flame or combustion. A number of flame-monitoring systems are compared and contrasted.
