Capture amplitudes in the reaction /sup 12/C(. cap alpha. ,. gamma. ) /sup 16/O at stellar energies

The ratio of cross sections for the E1 and E2 capture amplitudes in the reaction /sup 12/C(..cap alpha..,..gamma..) /sup 16/O has been determined from ..gamma..-ray angular distributions obtained at E/sub c.m./ = 1.7--2.8 MeV. The results confirm a nonnegligible contribution of the E2 amplitude to the reaction rate at stellar energies.
