Wood-fired boiler to save firm $3M a year

Journal Article · · Energy User News; (United States)
OSTI ID:5202567
An $8.5 million wood-fired boiler that will burn 100,000 tons of wood waste each year should save a Long Island Procter and Gamble plant $3 million in avoided fuel costs each year and pay for itself within three to five years. Wood wastes collected from a radius of 75 miles will include metropolitan New York and Philadelphia. The boiler will produce 240,000 pounds of steam per hour at a pressure of 900 pounds per square inch. Some steam will be directed to a turbine generator to produce enough electricity for the manufacturing site. The boiler will handle wastes in powder form to four-inch strips. It features a continuous ash discharge spreader stoker, an economixer, and a heat transfer system. (DCK)
