Experimental study of the cross-flow turbine

The performance of the cross-flow turbine (C-F-T), or Banki Turbine, was studied experimentally by varying the number of blades, the runner diameter, and the nozzle entry arc under flow/head variations. Four runners with the same width were tested. One of the runners had 20 blades and a diameter of half that of the others. The other three runners had 20, 15, and 10 blades, respectively. Water was admitted to the runners vertically through the nozzle of the same width as the runner with three nozzle entry arcs. From these experiments a new design for this turbine was presented. Using a case study, comparisons were made between the C-F-T and a diesel engine fuel in terms of annual cost/KWh for a range of diesel fuel prices. This experimental study showed that for each runner, the maximum efficiency of the runner increased when the nozzle entry arc was increased. This increase in the maximum efficiency corresponds to a reduction in the size of the separation zone on the back side of the blades, which was observed from flow visualization using a strobe light. Also this maximum efficiency always occurs at about the same unit rotational speed of the runner regardless of the nozzle entry arc, flow/head variations, runner diameter, or number of blades for a constant nozzle throat width ratio.
