Superfund Record of Decision (EPA Region 5): Folkertsma Refuse Site, Walker, MI. (First remedial action), June 1991. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5201657
The 8-acre Folkertsma Refuse site is an inactive industrial landfill in Walker, Kent County, Michigan. Surrounding land use is primarily industrial with a few private residences in the vicinity. The site overlies surficial glacial and bedrock aquifers, both of which are used for local drinking water supplies. Onsite features include an uncapped landfill, a man-made creek and a drainage ditch that join and discharge to Indian Mill Creek. Further investigations in 1985 and 1988 characterized onsite and offsite (Indian Mill Creek) contamination, and determined the potential for future ground water contamination. The Record of Decision (ROD) addresses engineering controls for source material and management of migration of contaminated ground water as a final remedy. The selected remedial action for the site includes excavating and dewatering approximately 1,300 cubic yards of contaminated sediment from the man-made creek, and consolidating these within the landfill area; and capping the landfill area with a clay cap and revegetated soil cover.
