A hybrid partial gasification cycle based on a novel air blown gasifier was proposed by British Coal in 1988. The concept of this cycle was developed in the Grimethorpe Topping Cycle Project and a DTI Working Party produced a report in February 1993 that recommended that the British Coal Topping Cycle should be developed to commercial realization by way of a prototype integrated plant of 75 MWe size. In order to achieve this goal certain key technological issues need to be addressed and an industry led consortium has been established to develop the components of the system. The consortium has established a program of activity aimed at achieving a design specification for a prototype integrated plant by March 1996. This paper discusses the component development plans of the consortium and indicates the expected performance and economics of both the prototype and commercial plants.
