Industry perceptions on qualification criteria for power reactor health physicists
- Quadrex Corp., Tulsa, OK (US)
This paper reports on a critical shortage of professional health physicists that has developed in the power reactor industry. One step that can be taken towards alleviating this shortage is to better define the qualification criteria for entry-level and senior power reactor health physics personnel and thereby establish clearer goals for education and training programs. A survey was undertaken utilizing the Delphi technique to determine practicing power reactor health physicists perceptions of the education, training, and experience requirements for entry-level positions and the position of Radiation Protection Manager. The survey yielded recommendations for criteria for general degree requirements, specific areas of technical education, and plant-specific orientation and training for entry-level power reactor health physicists and criteria for additional education requirements and experience necessary for the position of Radiation Protection Manager.
