Solar gain: winners of the passive solar design competition

Book ·
OSTI ID:5198542
The California Passive Solar Design Competition was held to encourage the design and construction of single- and multi-family homes that incorporate passive solar heating and cooling and are moderate in cost. To enter the competition, architects or designers familiar with the fundamentals of passive solar heating and natural ventilation had to join with a builder and submit a design that could be easily adapted to commercial construction techniques and that would appeal to California homebuyers. The purpose and rules of the competition were spelled out in 1978 in Assembly Bill 3046, authored by Assemblyman Herschel Rosenthal (D-Los Angeles). The legislation specified that the California Energy Commission conduct this competition with the cooperation of the Office of the State Architect. Under contract to the California Energy Commission, the Governor's Office of Appropriate Technology managed the competition and published this portfolio. The first chapter of this portfolio reviews the competition rules and the judging, evaluation, and selection of the winning designs. Chapter Two explains the thermal performance and economic analysis used in evaluating the entries. Descriptions of the winning designs, with cross sections and construction details, follow in Chapter Three. Among the entries that did not receive awards, there were some notable concepts. These are detailed in Chapter Four. Chapter Five is a guide to passive solar heating and natural ventilation, followed by sources for further information, a glossary, and a bibliography.
