Title: Portable instrumentation for solar absorptance and emittance measurements

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5198051

Two portable instruments, one designed for solar absorptance and the other for emittance measurements, have been evaluated. A Solar Spectrum Reflectometer was used for solar absorptance measurements while a model AE Emissometer was used to measure the emittance for an 80/sup 0/C blackbody. Both instruments are manufactured by Devices and Services Co., Dallas, TX. The Solar Spectrum Reflectometer uses four different detector/filter combinations to match an air mass two solar spectral distribution. The solar absorptance values measured for a variety of solar coatings were determined to an accuracy of +-0.02 absorptance units. For second-surface solar mirrors, the instrument underestimates the hemispherical solar reflectance when the reflecting surface is more than 0.2 mm away from the measurement port. The emissometer consists of a heated measurement head and separate display unit. The accuracy of this instrument is better than +-0.03 emittance units for black chrome solar coatings and better than +-0.06 emittance units for all coatings studied.
