Feed, bosh and tuyere drill-core cokes were obtained from blast furnaces operating with coal and oil injection at the tuyeres to determine the influence of the injection of hydrocarbon fuels. Tensile strength, microstrength and porosity determinations of the various coke samples demonstrated that coke bed structures and coke properties at the tuyere level were affected by the fuel injection. Larger bosh in-fill and raceway regions found with coal injection were associated with a higher degree of coke size reduction and lower mechanical strength attributable to the stronger mechanical action of the raceway.
