Underwater vehicle technology advances

The evolution of subsea work systems, manned submersibles and remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) has been well documented, but autonomous remotely controlled submersibles (ARCs) are a relatively new development on the underwater scene. Once ARCs have established creditability as instrument platforms in these areas, they will find uses in the offshore oil patch where other devices such as ROVs, manned subs or divers are now employed. The ability to perform any task will depend on payload endurance, so-called artificial intelligence level as well as data gathering and control sensors.
