VLSI starts a numeric revolution

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5197252
Numeric computation is undergoing a revolution. This is being caused by the defacto acceptance of the proposed IEEE standard for binary floating point arithmetic. This standard is being accepted because it promotes good arithmetic and because it has been implemented in the Intel 8087. As this standard becomes universally accepted, numeric programs will finally become truly portable. 12 references.
