Process parameter effects on arc physics and heat flow in GTAW

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5197153

The need or a more basic understanding of welding processes has engendered efforts to provide an experimental data base for use in weld process modeling. Work to determine interrelationships of heat source, molten pool, and weld bead geometry is described here, and the sensitivity of these interrelationships to welding variables is discussed. The effects on bead morphology of changing current, welding speed, and filler wire speed, with practical boundaries, are presented as a multivariable plot. A model of the relationship between process parameters and weld bead morphology is presented; the model involves dynamic heat and mass balances in a control volume containing the molten pool.
