This paper considers a method of investigation of the potential dependence of the specific adsorption of anions, consisting in experimental determination of the liability of steel to hydrogen embrittlement in relation to the anion composition of the electrolyte and the potential at which a passivating film is formed at the tip of a crack and calculation of the ratio of the adsorption coefficients of the competing anions. Data are presented on the specific adsorption of some anions on martensitically aging N18K95MT at potentials from -1 to +0.8 V n.h.e. embrittlement increase in the order fluorine-iodine-bromine-chlorine, the same as in pitting on iron.
