Performance of sodium-beta alumina solid electrolyte in Na/S cells

The performance of sodium-beta alumina type solid electrolytes is limited by degradation. Two different modes of degradation are discussed. Mode I involves the well studied current focusing on a pre-existing surface flaw; Mode II involves internal sodium precipitation and possible microfracture. The second mode can be activated when a gradient in transport number ratios has been created by chemical reduction of the electrolyte by the sodium electrode. The implications of the degradation for cell operation are discussed. 9 refs.
