The emission-line spectra of galaxy nuclei, both active and normal, may be represented as the sum of two components, produced by shock waves and by H II regions. These components differ in the relative intensities of their bright lines. Among 18 galaxies for which adequately detailed spectra are available, Cyg A, 3C 98, 3C 327, 3C 192, PKS 2322-12, NGC 1275, and NGC 1052 have emission lines attributable to shock waves, while the spectra of 3C 178, NGC 3227, NGC 5253, NGC 5408, and II Zw 70 are due to H II regions. In the case of NGC 1068, NGC 3516, NGC 4151, Mrk 1, Mrk 3, and Mrk 34, the contributions of shocks and H II regions to the spectrum are comparable. Not a single galaxy calls for sources other than photoionization by hot stars or interstellar shocks for a qualitative interpretation of the line spectrum.
