The structures and properties of water near interfaces are crucial for the understanding of many surface phenomena involving water. Examples include surface induced ordering or disordering, wetting, adhesion, friction, stability of membranes, and activity of proteins in aqueous environment.[sup 6] Structure of water at an electrode/water interface also directly affects the electrochemical processes.[sup 7] Despite extensive studies in the past, especially in theory, our understanding of water interfaces is still rather primitive because experimental information has been very limited owing to the lack of suitable experimental techniques. We report here our recent measurements on several water interfaces using infrared-visible sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy which has been proven to be a very sensitive and versatile surface probe.
