Design and cost study of the ESPRESSO blanket concept for the Tandem Mirror Fusion Reactor

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5188371
Structural design, assembly and parametric cost studies of the proposed ESPRESSO blanket concept for the Tandem Mirror Fusion Reactor of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are discussed. This blanket concept uses a two-pass cross-flow tube bank with solid lithium ceramic breeder and helium coolant. The proposed structural design includes a number of mutually pressure-supported canisters forming a ring module. Each ring module is completely independent with tapered circular end plates at its ends and a cylindrical back support taking the pressure load. A proposed assembly sequence is discussed. The CAPPUCCINO computer code was developed for sizing the solenoidal coils and performing the canister and module geometric, thermal-hydraulic and cost calculations for this study.
