The authors have examined the six component system of Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-B{sub 2}O{sub 3}-CaO-K{sub 2}O-Na{sub 2}O-SiO{sub 2} by investigating the effects of Na{sub 2}O substitution for CaO, CaO substitution for SiO{sub 2}, and Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} substitution for B{sub 2}O{sub 3} on melt viscosity, melt conductivity, and liquidus temperature. These compositional studies show that for the Na-Ca exchange, the melt conductivity increases by a factor of 140 while the melt viscosity decreases by less than a factor of 1.6; for the Ca-Si exchange, the melt viscosity decreases by a factor of 20 while the melt conductivity increases by less than a factor of 1.3; and for the Al-B exchange, a factor of four increase in melt viscosity is accompanied by a factor of two decrease in melt conductivity. The major crystalline phase in these glasses is CaSiO{sub 3}, with the liquidus temperature increasing from about 700{degrees}C to about 1150{degrees}C when 35 mole% Na{sub 2}O is replaced with 35 mole% CaO.
