A series of new perovskite-type reduced europium niobates Eu{sub x}NbO{sub Y} (0.5{le}x{le}0) were prepared by conventional methods. Their formation process. structural and physical properties were studied by means of {sup 151}Eu Moessbauer spectroscopy, powder XRD and EPMA methods, electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. etc. Several unique features of these systems were found: a much higher reduction rate of Eu{sup 3+} to Eu{sup 2+} by Nb oxides (NbO, Nb{sub 2}O{sub 3}, NbO{sub 2}) than that by Nb metal; extremely large isomer shifts for Eu{sup 3+}; and spin glass-like behavior at temperatures below 6K.
