A strong correlation has been reported between mechanical behavior and local microstructural features in whisker-reinforced composites. These microstructural features are generally: (1) matrix properties, e.g., dislocation density and second-phase particles, (2) characteristics of the whisker/matrix interface, e.g., wettability and interfacial precipitates, and (3) size and shape factors of SiC whiskers, e.g., aspect ratio, surface roughness, and whisker corner profile. Recently, it has been found that other matrix constituents, e.g., coarse Mn-containing intermetallic particles, and the inhomogeneous distribution of whiskers may also affect the mechanical behavior of the Al-SiC[sub w] composite. Particular emphasis has been placed in the present study on investigating in detail the relationship between microstructures and room-temperature tensile properties for the powder-metallurgy (P/M) fabricated 2XXX Al-SiC[sub w] composites. The composite materials selected for this investigation have two different matrix compositions: the 2124 and 2009 Al matrices. The chemical composition of the 2009 Al matrix is similar to that of the 2124 Al matrix, but contained little of no Mn. The effects of microstructure in different aging conditions on mechanical properties were also assessed.
