Health assessment for Rockwell International, Allegan, Michigan, Region 5. CERCLIS No. MID006028062. Preliminary report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5184651
Rockwell International is listed on the National Priorities List. The company has been active since the early 1900s, manufacturing universal-joints for heavy trucks and construction equipment. Quenching and cutting fluids, used for heat treating and machining various ferrous metal parts, were initially discharged to the Kalamazoo River. Later these waste streams were discharged to three unlined settling ponds which discharged to the Kalamazoo River. Recovery wells and river sediment analysis revealed the following maximum contaminant levels: arsenic (62 ppb) and lead (11 ppb). Elevated levels of 4-methyl-2-pentanone and cyanide were also found; however, the specific levels were not provided. It is believed that the three abandoned ponds contain cyanide from previously used quenching fluids. Contamination of ground water, subsurface soil, and surface water has been detected at the site; however, there has been no hydrogeological investigation at the site to determine the extent or direction of contaminant flow. The site is of potential public health concern because of the risk to human health that could result from possible exposure to hazardous substances at levels that may result in adverse health effects over time.
