Ensuring the safety of spillway radial gates

Safety factors pertinent to the design and operation of radial gates on dam spillways are outlined in the article. Sizing considerations discussed include economics and structural flexibility. Safety evaluation and safety considerations are outlined, with special emphasis on trunnion anchorages and seismic evaluation. Maintenance of gate hoists and regular gate inspections are described. An inspection checklist is provided in the article, and six guidelines toward ensuring spillway radial gate safety are identified.
