Oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde on Sb/sub 2/O/sub 4/

Journal Article · · Kinet. Catal. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5182722
Sb/sub 2/O/sub 4/ has been shown to exhibit very high selectivity with respect to the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde, but at an extremely low specific catalytic activity. The sample of Sb/sub 2/O/sub 4/ used in this study was subjected to preliminary calcination for 5 h at 500/sup 0/C and for 10 h at 560/sup 0/C in air. X-ray analysis and IR spectroscopy of the samples were consistent with characteristic parameters of Sb/sub 2/O/sub 4/. The concentration of methyl alcohol in the starting material was determined by an adsorption method, the concentration of formaldehyde in the product mixture by bisulfite analysis, and the amount of CO and CO/sub 2/ chromatographically.
